A cousin of mine married a real estate developer. His business was very successful. Recently, she felt it time to discuss a long overdue vacation together. He agreed, and promised her, “Once I finish this deal I've been putting together." He even booked the tickets and the accommodations. Finally, his big deal was finally sealed, and he had a massive stroke. She buried him the week they were to go to Italy.
As she contends with her grief, all I can do is listen, without judgment. She wouldn't mind if I repeat one thing she has told me that sticks. “From time to time, throughout my life” she's said, “I've stopped, closed my eyes, taken a few breaths, and asked myself, 'Right now, do I have enough?'” She always found herself answering affirmatively.
