Stocks were mixed worldwide today, lacking any key news or new concerns. The Asian Dow rose a healthy 0.76%, with all major markets except China up good amounts. In Europe, the STOXX 600 lost 0.24%, as all major markets except Spain's were down modest amounts. In Latin America, prices were mixed other than a big 3.2% decline in Brazil.
US shares followed two main paths today, with blue-chips stronger and tech stocks weaker. The result was a 95 point or 0.38% gain in the Dow Industrials, but a 54 point or 0.75% decline in the NASDAQ, where profit taking hit tech shares hard. The Transportation Average was up 0.04%, and the S&P 500 was down 0.07%, making the day pretty much a wash overall. On the NYSE, there were 1,609 winners, buoyed by the many interest-rate sensitive issues that rallied, vs. 1,345 losers.
