Lessons from Read

You may have heard of Ronald Read by now, but his story is inspiring and has a lot to teach us about life and investing. Born in 1921, Read was a veteran who served in North Africa, Italy and the Pacific theater. Upon his return he worked for many years as a gas station attendant and a janitor for JC Penney. He passed away on June 2nd, 2014.


Read lived a humble life. He drove an older Toyota Yaris and dressed in worn flannel shirts. In his free time he would often collect fallen branches to use in his wood stove. He enjoyed breakfast at the local coffee shop where on one occasion, another patron covered his bill, assuming he had little means by which to pay.
