Oil prices soared today on optimism over talks by the Saudis and Russians of limiting supply. Crude oil hit $42 a barrel, the year's highest level. Oil stocks soared, lifting European markets higher. London's FTSE was up 0.7%, the STOXX 600 up 0.5%, and the Global Dow Index gained a full percent.
In the US, Chevron (CVX) and XLE both added more than 2 points. US stocks as a whole weren't quite so strong, but still look to finish strongly in the plus column. Nearing the close, the Dow is up 180 points, with both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ also up about 1%.
Gold is about unchanged today, but silver and platinum are both up sharply: plus 25 cents on silver, plus $11 on platinum. But again, the gold and silver mining shares are leading the pack.
