OCTOBER’S MY FAVORITE MONTH OF THE YEAR. It probably has more good surf than any other time of the year. The leaves are changing, in line with the pleasantly crisp mornings. Tuna fishing is usually still pretty good but less crowded than earlier in the year. Elk season opens in the Rockies! And my birthday falls in the middle of October. Good times!


But 2014 hasn’t served up a good October from where this writer stands. The month was literally rife with costly stock market deception¸ including arguably the first Dow Theory sell signal in years – or at the very least, the breaking of a 3-year uptrend in the Dow Industrials and the S&P 500. But in no time flat, those sell signals were promptly reversed, leading to new all-time highs in the major US averages and a new (or at least, reconfirmed) Dow Theory buy signal.
