Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a screening of a new documentary called Money For Nothing: Inside the Federal Reserve, hosted by the CFA Society of San Diego. Jim Bruce, an old subscriber, produced and directed this enlightening and well-balanced film. A Q&A session with Noble Price winning Economist Harry Markowitz (the father of Modern Portfolio Theory), Rob Arnott (Founder of Research Affiliates) and Jim Bruce followed the screening.


Those who avidly study the Fed may not find much groundbreaking information in the film, but it does an excellent job of chronicling the evolution of the Fed's role throughout history. The intriguing storyline covers the Fed's trials and tribulations as it adapts to an ever changing global and investment landscape. Nearly every major crisis since the Fed's introduction is covered, including the Fed's response and some thought provoking analysis on whether the Fed's moves were appropriate.
