Stocks were generally mixed around the world today, but up in the U.S. Following the theme of the last couple of months, investors are mostly optimistic about the Trump administration, and nothing said or done today changed anyone’s mind as the Inauguration went off without a hitch. Otherwise, it was mostly quiet on the news front.
The Dow Industrials gained a hefty 95 points to close near its highs of the day, while the NASDAQ and S&P 500 were also up, but not so decisively. The NASDAQ rose 15 points and the S&P nearly 8. After a nasty two-day selloff, bonds stabilized today and finished nearly unchanged. The US dollar index lost 0.31%.
Crude oil and the precious metals enjoyed a good day. Oil was up $1/bbl. to $52.33; gold gained nearly $3 to 1207.40, silver up a nickel, and platinum zoomed $20 higher. Oil stocks were up modestly, XLE gaining 28 cents/share, and XAU rose more than a ... Log in or subscribe to continue reading.
