Stocks kicked off 2017 on a positive note, with most major averages solidly in the green. The Dow Jones Industrials jumped 150 points in early trading, only to give back those gains as the day progressed. A late-day rally took the Industrials higher once again, to close up 119 points at 19,882.
The Nasdaq and broader S&P 500 gained as well, each up 0.85%. The Transports and Utilities were the only averages in the red today, with the Transports losing 0.22% and the Utilities down 0.35%.
The dollar started the year out strong as well, gaining nearly a percent to close at 103.25. This helped send oil lower, with light crude slipping 2.6% to close at $52.33
Bond market moves were more subdued, with longer maturities flat to up, while shorter maturities slipped slightly. The yield on the 10-year note sits at 2.45%
