I have done 8 or 9 walking days of my 500 km pilgrimage here on Jeju Island. The vistas are truly stunning at times, with beautiful cliffs, vibrant flora and fauna aided by the volcanic soil, cherry blossoms and the yellow rapeseed flowers everywhere. And much of the island is under the watchful eye of the majestic Mount Halla, a dormant volcano.
The interesting thing about a pilgrimage is that it simplifies everything to walking, eating, sleeping, overcoming challenges and enjoying beautiful moments. It actually becomes a microcosm of your life so that if you have certain habits they become even clearer. I am learning the importance of organization: even the way I pack my bag is crucial -- if there is a flash rain storm then I need to be able to access my waterproofs.
