Daily Recap

Market news today mostly focused on the Fed's latest meeting minutes, which seem to confirm an interest rate increase in the next few weeks. The reaction to this non-news was accordingly muted. Bonds finished about unchanged from yesterday, the US dollar was slightly lower, and stocks were mixed.

 

In Asia, shares were mostly higher -- led by the Hong Kong market, which gained 1%. European shares were less positive, and the STOXX 600 index finished about unchanged. In the US, shares were lower most of the day, and yet the Dow Industrials staged an impressive rally into the close, giving it once again new all-time highs. At the close, it was up 32 points, compared to the S&P 500 (down 3) and the NASDAQ (down 5).

 

The precious metals were modestly higher -- Gold up $3 and platinum up $2; silver was stronger, up 8 cents. The mining shares got hit kind of ... Log in or subscribe to continue reading.
