The politicians have been kicking the can down the road, but finally the can has hit a brick wall. Everybody knows that the US's debts are growing, but the problem with halting the debt-growth is that it involves sacrifice and pain in an election year.
The Republicans want to halt the progress of debt by cutting entitlements. The Democrats want to halt the debt-growth by raising taxes on the rich. The parties don't agree and they can't seem to compromise.
Both parties claim that they can foment growth and create jobs by doing it their own way. So far "their own way" doesn't add up. When you are a confirmed drunkard, you can't remain sober by cutting down your alcohol intake by one tenth. The US debt has risen about five trillion during the last four years under Obama.
