Writing for Dow Theory Letters puts one on pretty shaky ground when it comes to gold. On the one hand, a large portion of our readers are firmly committed to the nearly exclusive ownership of gold, and don’t appreciate any negative comments about the beautiful yellow metal. On the other hand, we have about an equal number of readers who just want the facts: leave the ideology at the door, please. Simply reiterating the oft-told and retold rationale for owning gold reassures the first group, while leaving the second group feeling less than satisfied. No matter what we write about gold, then, somebody’s going to be unhappy. That being the case, I mostly just write it the way I see it, and let the chips fall where they will.
