Has the UK Really Collapsed?

by Benjamin J. Butler

Brexit

Britain “has collapsed politically, monetarily, constitutionally and economically.”

-- Mark Rutte, Dutch Premier,

I wrote half of this note in Marbella, Spain and now I am on a flight to London. I fly to the UK with both excitement and trepidation. Whilst I was in Spain, my country voted to make one of the biggest constitutional and political decisions in the post-war period in leaving the European Union. The ramifications are profound and global -- and incredibly difficult to articulate in just one column.

We had warned investors for months about this strong likelihood, although I must admit at the 11th hour I saw a slightly diminished probability because of the murder of British Member of Parliament Jo Fox. I hope that our readers were at least positioned defensively as we suggested.

Brexit Day

By Benjamin J. Butler

Royal Palace of Madrid, Spain

I have been in Madrid this week attending a fintech (financial technology) conference called Money Conf (https://moneyconf.com). I was asked to speak again in Moscow on the future of the global economy this week but unfortunately the logistics didn't work so well, as I was due to be on holiday in Spain with my family. So I decided to combine some work and pleasure and hit a tech conference here in Madrid.

Clock Ticking to Brexit

By Benjamin J. Butler

Marbella, Spain

A number of events might converge to make this a summer of turmoil: the US election, the Chinese economy, the Federal Reserve, and of course Brexit. The UK vote on the EU is just a week away now.

The tide is turning against the European project. I am writing today from Marbella in Andalusia, Southern Spain where I have the right to live, work, use the medical system and drive a car all thanks to my EU passport. My family has had a holiday home here for 45 years.

Brexit Debates

By Benjamin J. Butler

South Kensington, London

I just flew back in to perhaps my favorite city in the world. I love the whole Pacific Coastal Highway in California, I adore the beaches of South East Asia and Bermuda, the European Alps, Manhattan in New York, the snow of Colorado, the beautiful mountain temples of Korea, ancient Kyoto in Japan. But as for cosmopolitan and global cultural center I do love London.

Perception Gaps

By Benjamin J. Butler

Hong Kong

I am in Hong Kong again, en route to London where I am giving a talk at SOAS, University of London, before going on vacation (and a little reconnaissance) to Spain.

It's been one of those exhausting weeks with back to back meetings from 7am or 8am through to 9 or 10 pm. I am still assimilating some of the meetings so I am going to keep this one short.
